The SEC Writes Crypto's Graduation Rules
The SEC proposed "Regulation Crypto Assets" on Tuesday — its first formal crypto rulemaking — creating two registration exemptions for token offerings (a $5 million startup route with light disclosure, and a tiered fundraising route up to $75 million a year with audited financials) plus a conditional safe harbor: once an issuer certifies it has completed the managerial efforts promised to investors, the asset is deemed outside SEC authority. The rules would also preempt state registration; comments run 60 days.
Winklevoss-Backed Cypherpunk Now Mines 18% of Zcash — and Wants 5% of All the Coins
Cypherpunk Technologies launched Cypherpunk Mining on Tuesday, acquiring 4,902 Zcash mining machines from a Winklevoss Capital affiliate in a $33.33 million all-equity deal — paid via a warrant for 43.3 million CYPH shares. The company says the fleet, already running across three US sites, represents about 18% of Zcash's network hashrate, making it the largest single operator. Cypherpunk holds 323,394 ZEC (~1.92% of supply) and targets 5%, with ex-Foundry executive Kevin Zhang heading mining.
BitBox's Own AI Audit Caught Two Severe Wallet Flaws — Patched Before Anyone Was Hurt
Swiss hardware-wallet maker BitBox disclosed two severe firmware vulnerabilities — a memory-corruption flaw in unconfigured Multi-edition devices that could enable malicious firmware installation, and a Silent Payments issue that could lock bitcoin to unintended addresses — found through internal review "including with frontier AI models." Both are patched in firmware 9.26.5; BitBox reports no exploitation and no lost funds, with exploit paths requiring successful phishing first. The Bitcoin-only edition never contained the affected code.
$700 to Ukraine. Binance Sent Russia the File.
Binance provided Russian investigators with the transaction records and personal details — passport copies included — of Yuri Belenkiy, a Russian IT specialist who donated just over $700 to Ukrainian fundraising groups, per a Reuters investigation citing law-enforcement documents. The data was cited in terrorism-financing charges; Belenkiy has been jailed since September 2025 awaiting trial. Binance exited Russia in 2023 but answered the request through a channel its own site lists for Russian law enforcement, saying it cooperates with lawful requests.
