Abu Dhabi Mines Coins, Buys Wrappers
Q2 filings show Mubadala and Al Warda holding ~$764M of BlackRock's IBIT through the bear — while on-chain analysis ties ~7,000 mined BTC to the emirate's Royal Group via Citadel Mining: one emirate, both custody models
Norway's Sovereign Fund Hits Record Bitcoin Exposure — Without Ever Buying Bitcoin
Norway's $2.4 trillion sovereign wealth fund reached a record ~11,549 BTC of indirect bitcoin exposure, per K33 research cited by The Block — roughly 86% of it through Strategy shares, with the fund's Strategy stake up about 50% to a reported $370 million in Q2 filings. K33 characterises the exposure as a byproduct of broad index ownership rather than a deliberate bitcoin bet; the fund holds no coins directly.
Trump Crypto Firm Gets Bank Charter
The Office of the Comptroller of the Currency granted World Liberty Financial — a crypto venture linked to the Trump family and the Witkoff group — a conditional national bank charter, per the Wall Street Journal, Financial Times, Politico and multiple other outlets. Coverage put the firm's stablecoin at approximately $4 billion and described the charter as preliminary and conditional rather than final. The approval was granted by a Trump-appointed OCC official, per coverage.
Update, Aug 18: the OCC's decision document (Corporate Decision #1385) details the conditions — at least $20M capital, a qualified internal audit manager, investor passivity agreements, GENIUS Act compliance — and confirms the bank would acquire USD1's reserves from BitGo under Regulation W's standing exemption for newly formed banks (12 CFR 223.42(i)), with the OCC noting the transfer could otherwise be a covered affiliate transaction. A Trump-affiliated entity holds about 38% of World Liberty, per the company. The trust charter permits no deposits or lending; Circle's path from conditional to final approval took roughly seven months.
Israel's Largest Bank Will Offer Bitcoin, Ether and Solana Trading From Early 2027 — Second Time Lucky
Bank Leumi announced a partnership with Galaxy Digital to let customers of the bank and its Pepper mobile arm buy, hold and sell bitcoin, ether and solana inside the Leumi Trade app, expected from early 2027 — which would make it the first Israeli bank to offer crypto trading. Galaxy provides trading (GalaxyOne Institutional) and custody (the former GK8). A 2022 attempt with Paxos was shelved after the Bank of Israel declined approval; Israeli regulators loosened crypto-deposit rules in July.
