Coldcard Losses Climb Past $100M
Estimates of the Coldcard theft have climbed past $100 million — most major outlets put it near $114 million, with one on-chain tracker at roughly $130 million (about 2,055 BTC) as a suspected fourth wave continues — all traced to a March 2021 firmware flaw that generated guessable seeds. Coinkite says it believes an attacker used AI to find the bug, and that its own AI review of its code weeks earlier found nothing. Brazilian victims have filed suit naming Coinkite's founder and several influencers who promoted the wallet; Nunchuk released an emergency multisig migration guide.
BlackRock Adds Three Onchain Funds
BlackRock launched two tokenized money market products on Monday: BRSRV, a new fund built for stablecoin reserves recorded on Solana, Ethereum and Stripe's Tempo, and on-chain shares of its existing Select Treasury fund (BSTBL) on Ethereum — both intended to qualify as reserve assets under the GENIUS Act, whose implementing standards regulators haven't finalised. CFO Martin Small told the Q2 call BlackRock already manages $60 billion of Circle's reserves — "about a quarter of the $300 billion stablecoin market" — and wants to be "the reserve manager of choice." Morgan Stanley, State Street and Fidelity run rival reserve funds.
Mastercard Buys BVNK for $1.8B
Mastercard completed its acquisition of stablecoin-infrastructure firm BVNK on Monday — a deal announced in March at up to $1.8 billion, including $300 million in contingent payments — closing months ahead of guidance and after Coinbase abandoned a $2 billion bid for the firm in November. BVNK processes roughly $30 billion in annualised stablecoin volume, and Mastercard says the pair will work on Open USD, the bank-and-payments consortium stablecoin launching later this year.
