BlackRock Adds Three Onchain Funds

BlackRock launched two tokenized money market products on Monday: BRSRV, a new fund built for stablecoin reserves recorded on Solana, Ethereum and Stripe's Tempo, and on-chain shares of its existing Select Treasury fund (BSTBL) on Ethereum — both intended to qualify as reserve assets under the GENIUS Act, whose implementing standards regulators haven't finalised. CFO Martin Small told the Q2 call BlackRock already manages $60 billion of Circle's reserves — "about a quarter of the $300 billion stablecoin market" — and wants to be "the reserve manager of choice." Morgan Stanley, State Street and Fidelity run rival reserve funds.

BlackRock: the reserve manager of choice

The line to catch isn't the two new funds. It's what BlackRock's own finance chief said on the earnings call: they already manage $60 billion of reserves for Circle, the company behind the USDC dollar coin — about a quarter of the entire $300 billion stablecoin market. They want to be the reserve manager of choice.

A stablecoin promises you a dollar. The dollar sits somewhere, earning interest. These funds are that somewhere. BlackRock isn't alone in noticing — Morgan Stanley, State Street and Fidelity all launched reserve funds this year; six managers are now chasing the same pool. The fight for crypto's most boring layer is the most institutional thing that has ever happened to it.

So when a coin says it's backed one-for-one by cash and Treasuries, increasingly the cash and Treasuries are parked inside a BlackRock vehicle. Whatever you hold a stablecoin for — payments, trading, plain access to dollars — it is now, at one remove, a claim on the largest asset manager on earth.

Bullish for tokenisation. A hard stare required if the whole point was to hold something nobody controls.
