Coldcard Mk3 Seeds Born Broken

Coinkite warned that seeds generated on Coldcard Mk3 hardware wallets running firmware 4.0.1 through 5.0.3 (March 2021 onward) may be compromised, after roughly 594 BTC (~$38 million) was swept from about 500 single-signature addresses in 25 minutes on Friday. Researchers at Block traced the issue to devices skipping their hardware randomness generator during key creation; both firms describe the analysis as preliminary. Mk4, Q and Mk5 are unaffected per early analysis; passphrase users face limited exposure. Update, Aug 1: Coinkite has since expanded its advisory to affected firmware on all current models, reversing the early analysis that cleared the Mk4, Mk5 and Q, and loss estimates have roughly doubled to ~$70M — see Coldcard Losses Hit $70M, All Models.

Market maker Wintermute reported that institutions accounted for a record 72% of spot volume on its OTC desk in the first half of 2026, up from about 61% in late 2025, crediting institutional mandates for Bitcoin's realized volatility falling to roughly 45% from ~70% in prior cycles. The report described retail as "largely absent" during the bear market, institutional flow as concentrated in fewer tokens, and tokenized assets up nearly 50% to $31 billion — institutions favoring Treasuries and credit, retail tokenized equities.
