Gemini Opens Ironwood Withdrawals

When Ironwood sealed Zcash's old privacy pool last week, the replacement opened empty. I wrote then that privacy is a crowd you rebuild. Three days in, the rebuild stands at roughly 40,000 coins, with 3.6 million still waiting to cross. Every new entrant makes everyone inside harder to trace.

Which is why Gemini matters here. The exchange has let users withdraw straight into Zcash's shielded pools since 2020, kept that support through the old pool's final year, and carried it into Ironwood from day one. Most regulated exchanges won't touch privacy features at all. One of the few that does is now, in effect, a recruiting office for the new crowd.

It is also the most watched door into it. Gemini is a know-your-customer exchange. It records who withdrew, how much, and when, and reports when required. None of that is hidden or new — the same outlet covering this week's announcement wrote in 2020 that shielded withdrawals from Gemini "aren't all that private." What the logs capture is your entry into the pool. What they cannot capture is anything you do after it.

So is the watched door worth walking through? Two honest answers. For the individual, yes — withdrawing shielded in one step beats withdrawing publicly and shielding afterwards, which leaves the same exchange record plus a public trail. For the network, also yes — every entrant thickens the crowd, including for those who arrived through quieter doors. The awkward truth for a coin built to route around watched doors is that its crowd gets rebuilt fastest through one. The pool doesn't care how you got in. Nobody watching from outside can tell either.
