
IonQ Publishes the Break-Bitcoin Blueprint
Quantum computing firm IonQ published what it calls the first complete engineering estimate for breaking the encryption behind Bitcoin signatures, per its own release and coverage from CoinDesk and Decrypt. Its claim: a machine of roughly 19,400 qubits — far smaller than the millions previously assumed — could crack one key in about 26 days, and IonQ's own roadmap targets that class of machine around 2028. The company announced this at its investor day alongside new chip orders and a raised revenue forecast; its CEO has noted IonQ also sells quantum-security products, and no one outside IonQ has yet verified the estimate.
IonQ's Clock: a sales pitch with a deadline
A quantum computing company just published a recipe for breaking Bitcoin's signatures.
Not a vague warning. A 70-page engineering estimate: this many qubits, this many operations, about 26 days per key.
The number that matters: 19,397 qubits — of the error-prone physical kind, supporting 1,457 error-corrected ones.
For years the consensus said breaking Bitcoin would take millions of physical qubits. IonQ says: on our architecture, under twenty thousand.
And its roadmap says machines of that class arrive around 2028.
Now the context.
The paper is IonQ's own, about IonQ's own architecture, reviewed by nobody yet.
The chip it announced the same day has 256 qubits and ships in 2027. The 10,000-qubit successor is a promise with a date.
The announcements came on investor day, alongside a raised revenue forecast. The stock jumped.
And the CEO told CNBC himself: IonQ is a major provider of quantum-security products. It launched a new one the same week.
Publish the threat. Sell the shield.
None of that makes the paper wrong. Estimates for breaking encryption have fallen for fifteen years — the CEO's own line is four orders of magnitude — and every revision has been downward.
But a deadline set by the vendor of both the weapon and the armour is a sales calendar, not a countdown.
The real number to watch isn't 2028. It's whether anyone outside IonQ confirms the 19,397.
