Coinbase Builds Quantum-Safe Custody

Verified · 23 Sept 2026BitcoinSep 23, 2026

Coinbase is developing post-quantum custody infrastructure designed to support all Bitcoin signature schemes, per coverage, with Decrypt detailing what it described as a $250 billion institutional playbook for the effort. Coverage placed Coinbase's quantum-resistance work in the context of a broader Bitcoin Lightning Network vulnerability, with a separate item from East Texas A&M University researchers describing what coverage characterised as the first quantum-proof defence applied to the Lightning Network. A third item noted that making Lightning quantum-safe may involve privacy trade-offs, per reporting.

Coinbase Custody: the middleman prepares to survive

Coinbase's cryptography chief admits the trick that guards its roughly $250 billion in client coins may not survive the quantum era.

That trick is key-splitting — chopping a private key into shares held by different parties so no single machine ever holds the whole thing. Many quantum-proof signatures can't be split that way.

So the fallback under development is a physical vault where the whole key gets reassembled, briefly, in one place.

The whole key, in one location. The very thing key-splitting existed to avoid.

None of this is live yet.

However, quantum-safe bitcoin may arrive for custodied coins before a solution exists for those who chose self-custody.

Institutions have engineers, budgets and deadlines. Self-custody has a mailing list and a debate.

The quantum migration won't just test Bitcoin's cryptography. It will sort its holders — and the sorted order is: custodied first, sovereign last.
