
Bitcoin Quantum Defense Plans Advance
Growing quantum computing capability is forcing Bitcoin and crypto industry players to urgently develop and fund post-quantum cryptographic defenses.
Bitcoin developers are advancing a quantum protection plan that would affect approximately 6.9 million BTC held in legacy wallets potentially vulnerable to quantum computing attacks. Separately, Project Eleven published a Q-Day recovery proposal designed to let users prove wallet ownership and recover funds following a quantum compromise event. The proposals represent distinct but concurrent responses to the quantum threat to Bitcoin's cryptographic security.
Quantum Bitcoin: the key that even a quantum computer can't steal
Once a quantum computer can forge your Bitcoin signature, how do you prove the coins are still yours?
Project Eleven's answer is elegant. A quantum attacker who cracks your private key still can't reconstruct the seed phrase it was derived from. Proving you know that parent key — without revealing it — is something only the real owner can do.
If it holds up, it separates the migration problem from the ownership problem. You miss the window to move your coins, this becomes your fallback.
It's unaudited, and Bitcoin's protocol itself needs to support it before it does anything useful. But at least a solution is on the table to mull over.
