Hyperliquid Gets a Guest List

Hyperliquid Gets a Guest List

Verified · 17 Sept 2026Perp DEXSep 17, 2026

Payward, Kraken's parent, announced plans to offer US clients on-chain perpetual futures through Hyperliquid, using what coverage described as HIP-3* markets — a permissioned variant allowing market operators to restrict participation — with Bitnomial building the contracts and NinjaTrader carrying accounts, per CoinDesk and multiple outlets. The offering was reported as planned rather than live. Coverage framed it as a test model for regulated US DeFi access.

HIP-3*: they bolted a lock onto the open door

The detail that matters is one asterisk.

HIP-3* is the new version of Hyperliquid's market-building system that lets whoever runs a market pick who's allowed to trade it. A guest list.

That's the exact opposite of what made Hyperliquid Hyperliquid: anyone, any wallet, no permission.

Kraken's parent Payward plans exactly that for US clients — through the guest-list version. Bitnomial builds the contracts. NinjaTrader holds your account. Both keep the approved-names list.

Hyperliquid's blockchain records the trades underneath. Planned, not live yet — but the shape is set.

Ten days ago Singapore's exchange opened its perps to US institutions. Coinbase filed for regulated stock perps. Now Kraken rents the leader's own engine — with a lock bolted on.

The onshore future isn't arriving as open access. It's arriving as the open protocol wearing a members-only jacket.

Good for volume, maybe. The regulated firms bring customers the open door never could.

Hyperliquid keeps the machine. The regulated firms keep the customer.
