Tether Passes Its First Real Audit

Verified · 14 Aug 2026Institutional TransitionAug 14, 2026

Tether is aggressively pursuing US regulatory legitimacy through lobbying, GENIUS Act compliance, and full reserve audits.

Tether announced that KPMG completed the first full audit of its financials — the long-promised Big Four review, covering its 2025 statements including gold holdings — and issued what the company described as a clean opinion, per CoinDesk and Bloomberg Law. USDT's circulation stands near $180 billion. Tether did not release the underlying financial statements alongside the announcement, and the opinion's details remain the company's characterization.

Tether's audit: the answer stays in the drawer

The calls for Tether to provide audited accounts have reverberated around crypto for a decade. Until now all it has provided is attestations — an accountant checking a snapshot.

Now it says KPMG has audited its 2025 financials — gold bars included — and issued a clean opinion.

But it didn't release the financial statements themselves. We have Tether's description of the audit, not the audit.

Tether finally answered its oldest question. Then it put the answer in a drawer. Old habits die hard.
