BlackRock Canada ETF Adds Bitcoin
BlackRock is steadily expanding its crypto product suite — from Bitcoin ETFs and covered-call funds to Aladdin integrations and global launches — cementing its dominance in institutional digital assets.
BlackRock Canada launched the iShares Equity + Bitcoin ETF Portfolio (IBQT) on the Toronto Stock Exchange on Monday: 97% global equities, 3% bitcoin, assembled by holding other iShares ETFs, with bitcoin exposure routed through BlackRock's Canadian iShares Bitcoin ETF, for a 0.22% fee. An international equity fund, XINT, launched alongside. Separately, BlackRock's investment institute said bitcoin's correlation with US equities is weakening and sentiment is turning, per The Block.
3% Bitcoin: the wrapper inside the wrapper
BlackRock's new Canadian fund puts 3% into bitcoin — but not directly. It buys another BlackRock fund, which holds the coins through BlackRock-arranged custody. A Canadian buys one ticker; the bitcoin sits at least three layers down.
Convenient, cheap, completely hands-off. Nobody buying IBQT is choosing bitcoin. It arrives as a preset ingredient, 3% of a balanced recipe, the way emerging-market bonds do. You get exposure without ever touching it, deciding on it, or knowing where it sits.
The next wave of "bitcoin holders" won't be people who chose bitcoin — they'll be people who chose a portfolio that happened to contain it.
Bitcoin was built so nobody had to trust an institution with money. That idea is buried three layers deep within products packaged by the very same institutions.
