BIP-110's Doomsday Option Surfaces
BIP-110, a controversial Bitcoin soft fork targeting non-financial data embedding, is collapsing under near-zero miner support while community opposition, led by Saylor and Back, intensifies.
BIP-110's mandatory phase opens at block 961,632, around August 9: nodes running the software will reject every block not signaling support, with lock-in forced by block 963,648 and activation near September 1. Miner signaling remains minimal — 38 signals per opponent Michael Saylor's tally — though Foundry is letting pool customers vote by hashrate through the window. Developer Chris Guida separately rebased Luke Dashjr's 2017 proof-of-work-change code onto Bitcoin Knots as a self-described "last resort" against miner resistance.
BIP-110: the fallback is a bigger deal than the fork
BIP-110 lost the vote. Its supporters' answer is a bigger weapon.
Developer Chris Guida has revived 2017 code that would change Bitcoin's mining puzzle itself — instantly locking every existing mining machine out of the chain that adopts it. If the money follows the new chain, the rigs go kaput.
But it's a big "if".
Nodes only rule when the money agrees with them. 97% of mining power isn't signalling, and no exchange is behind it.
If Foundry — the biggest mining pool, which has put its signal to a customer vote — opts for BIP-110, we may have something to think about. Until then, this threat is a nothing-burger.
